Dr Levine extended her influence to the national and international arena. This novel undertaking, as well as her many contributions throughout the university, led to her prestigious appointment as University Professor of Boston University. In the early 1970s, convinced that the important concepts of pharmacology should be understood widely, not just by the pharmacologist or physician, she created a new course in pharmacology for undergraduates. She was promoted to Chairman, and later Associate Dean, of the Division of Graduate Medical and Dental Sciences and in that capacity developed the MA and PhD degree programs offered at Boston University School of Medicine.
As Professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, Dr Levine conducted investigations in the field of pharmacokinetics, especially in the area of drug absorption, with supportįrom NIH, the Department of Defense, and a number of pharmaceutical companies.
In 1958 she joined the faculty of Boston University, where she continued until her death in February 2003. She earned her undergraduate degree in chemistry and education from Hunter College, a master’s degree in organic chemistry from Columbia University, and her doctoral degree in pharmacology from Tufts University. Dr Levine was a remarkable pharmacologist and educator. This seventh edition, now named in her honor, continues her visionary goal of elucidating the basic principles of pharmacology in a style accessible to the nonspecialist reader. Levine’s Pharmacology: Drug Actions and Reactions is dedicated to Ruth R.Levine, PhD, who first authored this text in the early 1970s and enriched it through six editions.
